OK I just found a very small tick on Laci. I use Sentinel, a combination heatworm, flea control and preventative, and wormer for dogs. It has nothing in it for ticks. So what can I use for ticks that would be safe for her? Maybe something that can be used with the Sentinel.
I have read about this collar:
Preventic collars kill ticks for up to 3 months and are a bargain. Clinical studies have proven them to be as effective as Frontline for tick control, but remember, they have no activity against fleas. Also remember that other brands of flea/tick collars are essentially useless. You can use a flea/tick collar until the day you see a flea or tick, then it's time to get serious. Since the Preventic collar must remain in close contact with the skin to be effective, it is necessary to secure it around a greyhound's throatlatch area (just underneath the jaw and behind the ears), so that it doesn't slide up and down the neck like his regular collar. Instead of cutting off the excess, you may use a paper hole punch to punch holes, then secure the loose end with a twist tie.
Anyone try the Preventic collar? _________________

I have been told that a flea collar on a grey is a NO-NO as well. I am guessing a tick collar is like a flea collar? I just use Frontline.... _________________ Traci and her crew

There's a lot of stuff on Greytalk about the Preventic collar both for and against. When I switched from Frontline to Advantage I read through several of the threads. I finally just treated my yard with triazicide instead (cats and the Preventic collar seemed to be a big no no). So far that's kept the ticks away. _________________

Just did a little poking around on the web. Preventic tick collars use "Amitraz" as the active ingredient; the toxicology information is here (site maintained by Cornell University). (Amitraz is one of two active ingredients in Promeris and acts as a MAOI.)
Looks like certain greyhound groups actually recommend Preventic collars, but the idea of flea or tick collars on greyhounds concerns me. _________________ Josquin the cat

Tics? Already?
I had used one on Keely for a bit, but that didn't seem to work on her. _________________ Elli

Anyone know any issues with using this when you have a well? The new house is on a well, and I am VERY worried about putting any chemicals in the yard (even though I know they say it takes like a 1000 years for water on the surface to percolate down into the ground water table, there are too many horror stories of people with wells that run brown after a hard rain).
We use frontline on the dogs, and I'm planning on getting chickens to get the ticks under control so they don't affect the humans. _________________ Polly & Bob

I think I will pass on that collar too.
For those of you that are using Frontline or Advantage, what heartworm preventative are you using?
Thanks for all of the info on the collar. _________________

I've used Iverheart or Interceptor for HW preventative. I've been very happy with the Advantage since I switched. They also make an Advantage Multi that also covers heartworm. _________________

we use ivermectin for hw, comfortis for fleas and watch for ticks. We've never had a problem, knock wood. I've used the tick collar for special trips in the past, not something I'd want to do regularly if it can be avoided. _________________ Living the greyt life: www.worldofgrey.com

I've been using the Preventic collars on my three greyhounds since last September with no issues. We had (or have) a major tick infestation in my neighborhood so it was an absolute necessity. The collars are good because they prevent the tick from attaching at all - paralyzes their mouth parts.
Anyhow, from what I've read the tick collars are safe for greyhounds, unlike flea collars. |

Be careful with using tick/flea products while your hound is on any medication. _________________ Christina and the Hounds

Has anyone here used Advantage Multi? Sounds great if it can be used on greyhounds. _________________

You can use Multi on greyhounds. It doesn't do ticks and I have a hard time trusting topical heartworm preventative, but that is just a personal opinion. _________________
